Buying/Renting Process

  1. Know your colors.
Use darker colors for a fall/winter wedding, and lighter colors for a spring/summer wedding. Be sure to grab a swatch of the wedding colors, so you can match them with your attire (these colors will also be used for the bridesmaids’ dresses). If your bride’s dress color is not the traditional white, you should get a swatch of that color too.
  2. Stand out and be consistent.
Go with a style and/or color (suit/tux, shirt, vest and tie) that is different from your best man and groomsmen (if you wear a suit, then they do need to wear a suit… same goes for a tux). Make sure your best man and groomsmen are wearing either all the same style, color and brand of clothing, or following a specific theme like each one has a slightly different tie.
  3. Research the store.
Check the reputation of where you’re renting/buying your tuxes or suits, and make sure they have a wide variety of and styles, colors and brands.
  4. Know their policy.
If you’re renting, ask for their rental policy and suit/tux pick up and return times.
  5. Save money.
Companies at bridal shows may offer discounts for giving them a small refundable deposit while you’re there. Also, ask if they give group discounts.
  6. Decide who’s footing the bill.
Some grooms pay for some or all of their best man’s and groomsmen’s attire, but ushers usually pay for their own. If you’re planning to buy rather than rent, you could make the formal wear your gift to them.
  7. Getting fitted.
Your groomsmen can get fitted on their own, or you can set a time for everyone to do it together. If you’re going to do it together, make a reservation for measurements several months before the wedding. This ensures a good selection, and about three to four weeks for alterations (including fixing any mistakes from the alteration process). Groomsmen who are out-of-town should be able to get sized at any tuxedo/suit shop, and have their measurements sent directly to you or a sister location near you.

Things to remember:

  • Your jacket sleeves should stop between your thumb and wrist, leaving less than ½ an inch of your shirt sleeves showing.
  • The seam of your jacket sleeves should line up slightly past your shoulders, and your collar should lie flat, leaving no bulges in your neck or back area.
  • When wearing the jacket, your backside should not be seen, and the slit in the back of the jacket should be closed.
  • Your pants should graze the top of your shoes, leaving a slight horizontal crease in the front, near the ankle, and fall just above the sole of your shoes in the back.
  • If you’re wearing a wing collared shirt, be sure to tuck the wings behind the tie.
  • If you’re wearing a wool topcoat, be sure it covers the bottom of your tux/suit jacket.
  • How to tie a necktie.
