A Groom’s Guide to Unique Wedding Entertainment - GigMasters.com {Guest Post}

Posted: May 09, 2012

One area where guys have really been stepping up in the wedding planning is booking the entertainment.  Grooms, you may have already considered local wedding services The Groom's List offers like: DJs, bands, a photo booth or even some casino tables for your big day, but Marta Segal Block of GigMasters.com tells us that there are a variety of entertainment options that may not be so obvious...

Here's what Marta shared:

Today’s grooms are more involved in wedding planning than ever before. But, that doesn’t change the fact that even the most interested groom starts the planning process at a disadvantage from most brides.

Most women with female friends (or sisters or cousins) have probably participated in at least one wedding conversation in their lives. That means that terms like “charger” “boutonniere,” “aisle runner” and “wedding colors” do not come as the complete shock to the system that they do for some men.

Thankfully, wedding entertainment is one place where the groom is not necessarily at a disadvantage.  That’s because wedding entertainment has evolved so much, so quickly that even a lot of “planning since birth” brides don’t know all the options.

It used to be that your only decision for wedding entertainment was a band or DJ, but today you have so many more possibilities.  The Wedding Singer is a hilarious movie, but today’s wedding bands have moved way past that stereotype. Many bands that have thriving careers as cover bands or indie rock bands also now do weddings.

Think about the kind of music you like to listen to in your regular life: Bluegrass? Latin? Rock?  Would it be great to have it for a wedding? Chances are, you can! If you are going with a non-traditional wedding band, we strongly suggest finding one with wedding experience. Playing a wedding is different than a club.

If you like the idea of bringing in a little of your personality to the wedding music, but would prefer to stick with a more traditional wedding band, consider getting actively involved in the play list. Most of today’s wedding bands expect to play a wide variety of music at a wedding and are more than happy to move YMCA to the Do Not Play List for you.

(Editor's Note:  Here are those unique options we mentioned at the beginning).  Entertainment isn’t just limited to music.  Strolling magicians, stilt walkers, silhouette artists and caricaturists are all being used to liven up the cocktail hour. Celebrity impersonators can liven up a reception or present a tribute to a parent or special guest. Artists from belly dancers to Mariachi bands are being used to help multicultural couples make sure that all parts of their heritage are included in the wedding, and the great “kids or no kids” debate is being solved by having clowns, balloon twisters, face painters and more brought in to occupy the youngest guests.

Although you may have started the wedding planning process behind your bride, don’t forget that it’s your day, too. Wedding entertainment is a great place to make sure your personality and ideas come to life.
